Tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) is a surgical procedure used to repair a damaged or torn cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) in the knee of dogs. The CCL is a crucial ligament that helps stabilize the knee joint, and when it is damaged, it can cause lameness and pain.
During a TPLO procedure the tibial plateau is cut and rotated to change the angle of the joint. This helps to stabilize the knee and reduce stress on the damaged CCL. The bone is then secured with a special bone plate and screws to hold it in place.
TPLO surgery is often used for dogs with CCL injuries because it has been shown to be effective in reducing lameness and improving mobility. It is typically performed by a veterinarian with specialized training in this type of surgery.
The Apollo TPLO plate was designed by a team of orthopaedic surgeons with more than 10,000 TPLO cases between them. The shape fits the proximal tibia better than any other plate. The screws are angled away from the joint. K wire holes enable temporary stabilisation of the plate prior to drilling the screw holes.
